The twelfth entry is a semana intensiva, and the adjective inside it sits on a Latin verb that English and Portuguese carried to opposite ends of the mind. Intendere was to stretch a thing towards something — a bow, a rope, and then the attention itself. From its participle intensus both languages built their adjectives, and here they behave alike and divide the work the same way. « Intensive » and intensivo mean packed into a short time, « intense » and intenso mean strong in degree, so a semana intensiva gives no trouble at all. The verb is where the roads part. English kept the aiming half and made « to intend », the having of a purpose. Portuguese kept the grasping half and made entender, to understand, reaching for a different compound, pretender, whenever it wants the purpose back. French took a third road and left entendre meaning to hear. So a reader who renders entendo as « I intend » has not simply picked the wrong word. He has followed one Latin stretch of the mind and come out at the wrong end of it.
