What holds these lists together
The lists for what there is to say about a person once name and job are out of the way: where they come from and what has happened to them, how they are right now, and how they usually behave. These questions come up in the same conversations — meeting someone, writing a reference, talking about a third person. Portuguese often frames a passing state as something you are «with»: estou com fome, estou com frio, estou com saudades tuas. The last has no single English word; «I miss you» covers only part of it. The finer shades, irritated against annoyed, reserved against withdrawn, are seldom explained and have to be learnt on purpose.
