Providing for old age

The fourteenth entry is a renda vitalícia, and the first noun is the one to slow down over, because English has narrowed its own cognate almost to nothing. Both descend from the Vulgar Latin rendita, what is handed back, and the verb is still there in Portuguese: render is to yield, and a renda is what has been yielded. Portuguese uses it across that whole range. It is the rent a tenant pays, a renda da casa; it is income of any kind, as in viver de rendas; and it is the stream of payments an insurer sells for a capital sum, which is this entry. English kept « rent » for the first job only, handed the second to « income », and for the third had to bring in a word from somewhere else entirely, « annuity », built on the Latin annus, the year. So the same payment is named after the year in one language and after the yield in the other. One further sense has no money in it at all: a renda is also lace, the kind worked on a pillow with bobbins.
