The entry in this list gives logo as a conclusion — não atende, logo não está em casa, he is not answering, hence he is not at home — and that is the sense a Portuguese philosophy class uses in penso, logo existo. It is also the rarer of its two lives. In ordinary speech logo is a point in time, and a near one: até logo is see you shortly, venho logo is I am coming in a moment, and logo à noite is this evening rather than some evening. The two senses have one origin. Logo comes from the Latin ablative loco, on the spot, and from on the spot it went two ways: at once in time, and it follows in an argument. English needs a different word for each — « shortly », « later on », « therefore », « hence » — and a fifth for the compound logo que, which is « as soon as ». Word order sorts them out: standing at the head of a clause after a comma, logo reasons; sitting next to a verb or a time expression, it counts the minutes.
