More about this list
Polish tells the time with ordinal numbers: o ósmej “at eight”, literally “at the eighth”. Half past counts towards the next hour, which catches every English speaker: wpół do dziewiątej is “half past eight”, literally “half to nine”. To arrange to meet, or to make an appointment, you use umawiać się — umówiłam się z lekarzem “I’ve made an appointment with the doctor” — and to meet somebody, spotykać się with z and the instrumental. Name days (imieniny) are worth a look in the calendar: many Polish families celebrate them much like a birthday.
