W kawiarni

Paul orders coffee and cake in a café — politely, with pan and pani.

In a café people use the polite form. The waitress calls Paul pan and uses the third person: Co dla pana?, literally “what for the gentleman?”. Watch the accusative after proszę: Proszę kawę.

Kelnerka

Dzień dobry! Co dla pana?

Paul

Dzień dobry. Proszę kawę z mlekiem.

Kelnerka

Dużą czy małą?

Paul

Dużą, proszę. Czy jest też ciasto?

Kelnerka

Tak, jest ciasto z jabłkami.

Paul

To proszę jedno ciasto. Ile płacę?

Kelnerka

Razem dwadzieścia pięć złotych.

Paul

Proszę. Dziękuję i do widzenia!
