Living in a home

Renting, moving in, and the things in a flat that need fixing.

Renting a home in Korea has its own vocabulary. Besides monthly rent, 월세, there is 전세: the tenant hands over a large deposit, gets it back at the end, and pays no rent at all. Most people live in flats, so lifts, 관리비 (the monthly charge for the building) and 층간 소음 (noise from the flat above) come up as often as the rooms themselves. Moving house ends with a party: 집들이.
