Keeping fit

Warming up, working out, swimming strokes, aching muscles and the sports people play for fun.

Most of these words name an exercise and take する: ストレッチをする, 筋(きん)トレをする, 深呼吸(しんこきゅう)をする. Loanwords dominate at the gym; the kanji compounds — 準備運動(じゅんびうんどう), 筋肉痛(きんにくつう), 腹筋(ふっきん) — are learned at school and are just as common in everyday speech. The swimming strokes are named for what the body does: 平泳(ひらおよ)ぎ is "flat swimming", 背泳(せおよ)ぎ "back swimming".
