What holds these lists together
Japanese has a gentle way of saying no, and arranging free time is where it is used most. An invitation is turned down by leaving the sentence unfinished — その日はちょっと…, that day is a little… — and the other person hears the refusal without a reason being given. A plain いいえ in the same place sounds far harsher than "no" does in English. Sport adds verbs that are built differently from their English counterparts: 勝つ and 負ける take the opponent with に, so a team loses to its rival as 相手に負ける. The lists run from hobbies and days off to tournaments, records and the people on the bench.
