Character and conduct

Words for what people are like and how they behave towards others.

Japanese describes character largely through how a person treats others, so many of these words are about consideration, modesty and fitting in: 気遣(きづか)い, 謙遜(けんそん), 協調性(きょうちょうせい). Most are na-adjectives or nouns rather than i-adjectives, and several sit in set phrases — 愛想(あいそう)がいい, 意地(いじ)を張(は)る. Take care with the ones that look like praise: お人好(ひとよ)し is someone too good-natured for their own good, and calling a colleague 神経質(しんけいしつ) is not a compliment.
