Connectors and sentence openers
The words that link one sentence to the next: adding, contrasting, explaining, moving on.
Most of these words stand at the start of a sentence and tell the listener how it relates to the one before: more of the same (しかも, そのうえ), a surprise (ところが), a reason (なぜなら, というのは) or a change of subject (さて, そういえば). That is why the examples here often have two sentences. English "but" and "so" each split into several Japanese words, and the choice carries attitude: それなのに complains where それでも simply reports, and すると narrates what happened where そこで tells what someone decided to do about it.
