The thirty-eighth entry, la sezione lavoro del tribunale, is a section of a court, and the word in the middle is the one that misleads. Il tribunale is the ordinary court of first instance, the building with the ordinary judges in it; Italian keeps la Corte for the higher benches, la Corte d’appello and la Corte di cassazione. A specialised matter is then handed to a section of that court rather than to an institution of its own, which is precisely what this entry records. « A tribunal » in British English is deliberately the other arrangement: a body set up beside the courts to settle one kind of dispute under lighter procedure, as in « the employment tribunal », « the tax tribunal », « the First-tier Tribunal ». The two words therefore pull in opposite directions. A reader who renders il tribunale as « the tribunal » lifts an ordinary court out of the court system; a reader who goes the other way promotes a specialist panel into one. The safe English for il tribunale is « the court », and la sezione lavoro is a division inside it.
