What holds these lists together

The two areas in which a learner first has to manage alone, and the same words carry both: what something costs and how you get there — from the ticket office and the bank counter to the driving school, the railway and the airport apron. Together they are also a school of fixed phrases. English says «by train», «on foot», «in cash» and «on sale», with a different preposition each time; Italian says in treno, a piedi, in contanti and in saldo, and none of them can be worked out from the English. Each one decides whether a sentence sounds right.
