The eleventh entry is la nuance de carbure, and the noun in the middle is one an English reader believes he already owns. In English « nuance » is a fine shade of meaning, the thing a careful critic notices and a blunt one misses. In a French workshop la nuance is nothing of the kind: it is a grade, a named and catalogued quality of material. Une nuance d’acier is a steel grade, la nuance de carbure is the carbide grade printed on the box of inserts, and changer de nuance means reaching for a harder or a tougher carbide, not rephrasing anything. The bridge between the two is an older French sense that both languages once shared, a shade within one colour: a grade is one shade in a family of alloys. So « the carbide nuance » is not a technical term at all but a quiet mistranslation, and a supplier’s catalogue in English will always say « grade ». The rule for reading is short. When nuance stands next to a material, read it as a line in a catalogue, never as a subtlety of tone.
