At the supermarket

The aisle, the label, the till.

The list for a weekly shop. In it is la recharge, and it is one French noun where English has three different ones and, for the commonest case, none at all. Une recharge de savon is a refill pack — the pouch you buy instead of the bottle. Une recharge de stylo is a pen refill. Une recharge de téléphone is a top-up. And la recharge de la voiture is the charge itself, the plugging-in. English has « refill », « top-up » and « a charge », with nothing shared between them, and it has no noun « a recharge » for a packet on a shelf — there, « recharge » is only a verb, which is why la recharge est moins chère reads as broken English. The French covers all four because it names the *action*, and lets the object take the name of what it is for.
