Beach and seaside holiday

The list for a fortnight by the sea. Its fourth entry is la chaise longue, and English borrowed those two words and put them on a different piece of furniture. An English « chaise longue » is the upholstered day-bed with one arm and no back at the far end — a drawing-room object, something a Victorian novelist reclines on. It does not fold, it does not go outdoors, and nobody rents one by the hour. The French chaise longue is the canvas frame on the sand: the sentence on this page says it se plie en deux, which rules the English object out entirely. English calls the thing a « deckchair » or a « sun lounger ». And the borrowing left a trace of its own confusion: « chaise lounge » is a very common English misspelling, because lounge seems to explain what the furniture is for.
