Training and competition
Warming up, the match, the finish line.
The list for a sport somebody trains for. Near the end is le vestiaire, the changing room, and English has the same word in a building nobody changes for football in. Latin vestiarium was the place where clothes were kept. French took it into ordinary life: le vestiaire is the changing room at a sports hall and the cloakroom at a theatre. English took it into the church: « the vestry » is the room where the vestments are kept, and the meeting that happens there. Nothing survives for the everyday sense, which is why English has to describe it — « changing room », « locker room » — where French has a noun. The family is otherwise shared: le vêtement is a garment, s’habiller is to dress, and English keeps « vest » and « invest », the second of which is literally to clothe somebody in an office.
