The stock market and securities

The thirty-sixth entry is le marché haussier, and the adjective that closes it shows two languages naming the same mood from opposite ends. English reaches for livestock. A market is a bull market or a bear market, the animals are fixed, and nothing can be built out of them: somebody who expects prices to rise is « a bull », and the only adjective on offer is the animal used again, « bullish ». French names the movement instead. La hausse is the rise and la baisse the fall, and the ending -ier turns each of them into a word that does two jobs at once. It is the adjective of this entry — un marché haussier, une tendance haussière, une révision haussière des prévisions — and, standing alone behind an article, it is the person: les haussiers and les baissiers are those betting on the rise and those betting on the fall. Two things follow. A French report can qualify almost anything this way, so une clôture baissière or un biais haussier needs no glossary. And the pair stays transparent where the animals never were: nobody has to be told which way a haussier thinks the market is going.
