Posting, liking, sharing, following and streaming: the words of life on social media.
Most of these words are new compounds built from old characters, and the characters explain them: 点赞 is to click a word of praise, 转发 to send something on, 直播 to broadcast directly. A few are loans chosen for their sound as well as their sense, such as 粉丝, “fans”, which also means glass noodles. The apps themselves are never named here; Chinese speakers usually call them by their brand names, but 聊天软件 and 社交媒体 are understood everywhere.
