The state, the law and public services
The counter, the form, the court and the election.
What holds these lists together
Dealing with an office in Korea means dealing with formal Korean. Forms, notices and announcements use the formal endings, Sino-Korean nouns and a compressed written style: a sign saying 접수 marks the counter where applications are handed in. For a foreign resident the first office is the local community centre, 주민 센터, and the first document the residence card, 외국인 등록증. The words of politics and the law are long but regular, and most of them are a noun that becomes a verb with 하다: 신청, an application, and 신청하다, to apply. The lists cover the counter and the form, rules and rights, and the vocabulary of government and elections.
