Society and the news
What the news reports, and what people discuss.
What holds these lists together
The news is written in a style a learner meets nowhere else at first: sentences end in the plain written -다 instead of the polite -요, and long Sino-Korean compounds carry whole ideas in a few syllables. 저출산 is a low birth rate, from the syllables for “low” and for “childbirth”, and 고령화 is the ageing of a society, with 화 as the ending for “becoming”. Taking such words apart is the most useful habit a reader of Korean newspapers can form. The lists cover the questions people discuss — generations, work, housing, equality — and the vocabulary the reports use to describe them.
