Technology, the internet and science

The phone, the app, the laboratory and the machine.

What holds these lists together

Much of the everyday vocabulary of technology is borrowed from English and then shaped by Korean sounds: an app is 앱, Wi-Fi 와이파이, and a mobile phone is a 휴대폰 or a 핸드폰, a word English does not use. Borrowed nouns become verbs with 하다, just as native ones do: 검색하다, to search, 다운로드하다, to download. A text message is 문자, literally “letters”, and the comments under a post are 댓글, “answering writing”. The later lists move from the phone in your hand to research, data, artificial intelligence and the questions of privacy that come with it.
