People and the family
Family members — yours and other people's — friends, children, and the words for talking about people.
Most family words come in two forms, and the choice depends on whose family you mean. Talking about your own mother to someone else, you say 母; talking about another person's mother, or calling your own, you say お母さん. Using the polite form for your own family sounds childish or odd, so it is worth learning the pairs together. Japanese also avoids あなた where English says "you": people are addressed by name with さん, or by their role.
