Industry and manufacturing

Factories, production and the way goods are made and moved.

Industry vocabulary is built from a handful of kanji that combine freely: 製(せい) (make), 産(さん) (produce), 工(こう) (craft, work) and 品(ひん) (goods). Once those four are known, 製品(せいひん), 製造業(せいぞうぎょう), 生産(せいさん) and 不良品(ふりょうひん) almost read themselves. One reading to watch: a factory is 工場(こうじょう), but the small family workshop is a 町工場(まちこうば), with the older reading こうば.
