The economy, industry and finance

Growth, the factory, the share price and the yen.

What holds these lists together

These are the lists of the business pages, and they are read long before they are spoken. Almost every term is a kanji compound, and the characters repeat from one compound to the next: 物価(ぶっか), prices, and 株価(かぶか), the share price, end in the same character, and 生産(せいさん), production, shares one with 産業(さんぎょう), industry. A learner who notices the parts reads new compounds before meeting them in a list. Rising and falling have two sets of verbs: 上(あ)がる and 下(さ)がる in conversation, 上昇(じょうしょう)する and 下落(げらく)する in a report, and moving from the first pair to the second is most of the step from talking about money to reading about it.

Spread across the levels

The category runs across the levels — it is an area, not a difficulty. If you practise it, you can also choose a level at the top of the practice page and then get only the part that sits there.
