The Future of a Shopping Street

駅前の商店街は、かつては買い物をする人でにぎわっていた。しかし、郊外に大きい店ができたのに伴い、商店街に来る人は次第に減っていった。
店の主人も年を取り、後を継ぐ人がいないまま閉店する店が相次いだ。今では、閉まったままの店が通りの半分近くを占めている。
こうした状況を何とかしようと、商店街の若い世代が中心となって、空いている店を安く貸す取り組みを始めた。これまでに、パン屋や本屋など五つの店が新しく開店した。
取り組みは地元の新聞にも取り上げられ、週末には若い家族も来るようになったものの、平日の人通りはまだ少なく、利益が十分に出ない店も多い。
長年この通りで八百屋を続けてきた男の人は、「昔のようにはならなくても、人が集まる場所であり続けてほしい」と話している。
