What a Library Is For
What a town library is for, now that most people carry a screen.
Argument and qualification: ~to wa ieru, ~ni sugi nai, ~to shite and ~ni kotaeru. The writer sets out a view, concedes a point and comes back to it — the shape of most opinion pieces in Japanese.
インターネットで何でも調べられる時代に、図書館はもう必要ないという意見がある。確かに、本を借りに来る人の数は、以前に比べて減っているそうだ。
しかし、私の住む町の図書館を訪れてみると、中は意外なほど人が多かった。机に向かって勉強する高校生、新聞を読む高齢者、絵本を選ぶ親子など、利用のしかたは実にさまざまである。
図書館の職員によると、最近は本を貸すだけでなく、地域の人が集まる場所としての役割が大きくなっているという。仕事の探し方を学ぶ講座や、子供向けに絵本を読む時間も定期的に設けられている。
もちろん、予算が少ない中で、すべての要望に応えることは難しい。開いている時間の延長を求める意見がある一方で、それに必要な職員は足りていない。
本を貸すだけの場所なら、確かに画面で足りるかもしれない。だが、誰でも無料で入れて、静かに過ごせる場所は、町の中にそう多くはないのである。
