Rethinking How We Work
Working from home: what one office worker gained, and what she missed.
An essay-like text. N2 Japanese leans on fixed expressions such as ~ni yotte, ~to tomo ni, ~ni kagirazu and ~wake de wa nai; the reasoning is carried by them rather than by short sentences.
数年前から、会社に行かずに家で働く人が増えている。私の勤める会社でも、一週間に三日は家で仕事をしてもよいという制度が導入された。
家で働くことの利点は、何といっても通勤がないことだ。毎日往復二時間かかっていた時間を、睡眠や家事に使えるようになった。資料を作るような仕事には、静かな家のほうが向いているとも感じる。
一方で、問題がないわけではない。同僚と顔を合わせる機会が減ったため、ちょっとした相談がしにくくなった。画面での会議では、相手の表情が分かりにくいことも多い。
また、仕事と生活の区別があいまいになりやすい。気づくと夜遅くまでパソコンに向かっていることもあり、意識して休憩を取るようにしている。
結局、どちらがいいかではなく、仕事の内容によって使い分けることが大切なのだろう。最近は、打ち合わせのある日は会社に行き、一人で進める仕事は家でするようにしている。
