A common trap

Wrong Se avessi accettato quel posto, oggi avrei vissuto a Milano.

Right Se avessi accettato quel posto, oggi vivrei a Milano.

Forcing both halves onto the same plane says something else. Se avessi accettato, avrei vissuto a Milano means: I would have lived there then, and not any more. The mixed form says the consequence reaches into today. English makes the same distinction with « I would have lived » against « I would be living », so the choice is familiar — what is new is that the se half does not move with it.
