The Old Market

An old market street, its closed shops and an attempt to revive it.

स्टेशन के पास वाला पुराना बाज़ार कभी सुबह से रात तक लोगों से भरा रहता था। लेकिन जैसे-जैसे शहर के बाहर बड़ी-बड़ी दुकानें बनीं, वैसे-वैसे यहाँ आने वाले ग्राहक कम होते गए।

बहुत से दुकानदार बूढ़े हो गए और उनके बच्चे यह काम आगे नहीं करना चाहते थे। इसलिए एक के बाद एक दुकानें बंद होती गईं। आज बाज़ार की आधी दुकानें ख़ाली हैं।

इस हालत को बदलने के लिए कुछ जवान दुकानदारों ने मिलकर सोचा। उन्होंने ख़ाली दुकानें कम किराये पर देनी शुरू कीं और हर रविवार एक छोटा मेला लगाना तय किया।

इसके बाद बाज़ार में किताबों की एक दुकान और चाय की एक छोटी दुकान जैसी नई दुकानें शुरू हुईं। रविवार को अब बच्चों के साथ परिवार भी आने लगे हैं। फिर भी, दूसरे दिनों में ग्राहक कम ही रहते हैं।

तीस साल से यहाँ फल बेचने वाले एक बूढ़े दुकानदार कहते हैं, "पहले जैसी भीड़ शायद न लौटे, लेकिन मैं चाहता हूँ कि यह जगह लोगों के मिलने की जगह बनी रहे।"
