The list for the day the van comes. In the middle of it is le diable, and it is not a figure of speech: the two-wheeled trolley you tip a fridge onto is called the devil. Nobody is quite sure why — probably because it goes up stairs and round corners in a way a sane object should not. Prends le diable, c’est plus lourd que ça en a l’air is an ordinary sentence on a moving day, and English says « sack truck » or, in America, « hand truck ». The same noun carries one of the most useful idioms in the language, and it belongs to this same week: tirer le diable par la queue, to pull the devil by the tail, means to be scraping by, short of money at the end of every month. English has neither — for the object it names a sack, and for the idiom it says « to live hand to mouth ».
