Garden and plants
Sowing, watering, cutting back.
The list for a patch of ground. The second entry is le potager, the vegetable garden, and it is named after what came out of it: le potage, the soup. The garden is literally the soup garden — un jardin potager — and the French records what the ground was for rather than where it sat. English says « kitchen garden » and names a room instead, which puts the emphasis one step further along. And English borrowed the French word twice, losing the garden both times: « pottage » came over early and survives only in « to sell your birthright for a mess of pottage », while « potage » came over later and sits on menus meaning a thick soup. So an English reader owns both halves of potager and has never seen them put back together.
