The list for a call somebody has to make. Near the top is la messagerie, one French noun that covers a range English needs four separate words for. Built on le message with the suffix -erie, which names a place or a trade, it started as the carrier: les messageries were the stagecoach freight companies, and the name survives in les messageries de presse, the newspaper distributors. From there it moved indoors: la messagerie électronique is email, la messagerie instantanée is chat, and la messagerie on its own, on a phone, is the voicemail — je vous ai laissé un message sur votre messagerie. English has « carrier », « mail », « instant messaging » and « voicemail », with nothing shared between them, and no word « messagery » at all.
