The list for a table for four. Near the end of it is copieux, and this is a false friend of register rather than of meaning. Les portions sont copieuses is the plainest compliment a French diner pays a kitchen: the plates are generous. English « copious » means the same quantity but lives in a different kind of sentence — copious notes, copious amounts of data, copious tears — and it is formal, slightly bookish, and almost never said about food. « Copious portions » reads as a translation. The English a person actually says is « generous », « hearty », « filling » or « a good size ». It is worth noticing because both words are correct and the dictionary will confirm the match: what it will not tell you is that one of them is what people say and the other is what people write.
