What holds these lists together
Three stages of a single chain, and in France that is hardly a figure of speech: the label says which area the produce comes from, the delivery note which port it passed through, and the recipe what to do with it. The lists share few words and still complete each other — whoever knows only the kitchen cannot read the label, and whoever knows only the label stands idle in the kitchen. The traps sit in the plainest words. Le raisin is the grape on the vine, not the dried fruit, which is le raisin sec; and la cave is where the wine is kept, not a hole in a hillside.
