Arguing and objecting

Conceding, qualifying, refuting.

The list a disagreement is conducted in. In the middle of it is la mauvaise foi, and the English words are the same three words while the register is not. In French it is an ordinary thing to say to somebody across a table: tu es de mauvaise foi accuses them of arguing a position they do not hold — of knowing better and going on anyway. It is sharp but conversational, it appears in family arguments, and de bonne foi is its everyday opposite. English « bad faith » lives almost entirely in contracts and courtrooms: « bargaining in bad faith » is a finding, not a remark, and « you are in bad faith » is not something English speakers say to each other. The English for the French sense is « you are being disingenuous » or, more plainly, « you know that is not true ».
