The essentials

RememberNo = geen, not = niet — and niet een does not exist.

geen negates a noun without a definite article, niet everything else — like “no” and “not”.

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

We hebben geen melk meer.We have no milk left.

  3. geen has no endings.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

If you translate “not a” word for word you can end up with “niet” and “een” side by side: niet een. In Dutch the two always merge into geen, just as English “no” replaces “not a”. Only when the number is stressed — “not a single one” — does one say niet één, with accents.

Wrong:Ik heb niet een auto.
Right:Ik heb geen auto.

Lesson

The full explanation

Read it all · about 1 min

Negation works much like English “no” and “not”. geen corresponds to “no” and stands before a noun that would otherwise have een or no article: Ik heb een auto → Ik heb geen auto. Ik drink koffie → Ik drink geen koffie. geen has no endings: geen tijd, geen huis, geen kinderen. There is no “do”: Dutch simply adds niet or geen.

niet corresponds to “not” and negates everything else: a verb (Ik werk niet), an adjective (Het is niet duur), a noun with de, het or mijn (Dat is niet mijn tas), a name (Dat is niet Bram).

Where niet stands: usually late in the sentence, behind the object, but before an adjective, a place expression and a participle: Ik ken hem niet. Ik ben niet thuis. English puts “not” next to the verb (“I don’t know him”); Dutch pushes it towards the end. The details come in the topic about the position of niet.

A closer look

One negation is enough

As in standard English, a sentence is negated only once: Ik zie niemand, not Ik zie niet niemand. Double negatives occur in dialects but count as errors in the written language.

Exceptions and special cases1
  1. Exception

When a language or subject follows a verb such as spreken or studeren

then geen is the rule, but you also hear niet: Ik spreek geen Duits / Ik spreek niet goed Duits.

Ik spreek nog niet goed Nederlands.I don’t speak Dutch well yet.

Why? With an adverb such as goed it is the speaking that is negated, not the language — then niet is used.

Worth knowing2
  1. Worth knowing

    nog niet and nog geen

“Not yet” is nog niet, “no … yet” nog geen. And “not any more” is niet meer, “no … any more” geen … meer — the pattern is the same as in English.

Ik heb nog geen kaartje.I don’t have a ticket yet.

  2. Worth knowing

    In Flanders: nie

In spoken Belgian Dutch niet often sounds like nie, without the t. In writing it is niet everywhere.

Dat weet ik niet.I don’t know that.
