Science and research

Hypotheses and samples, laws and formulas, atoms, cells and the universe.

Scientific Chinese names whole fields with endings a learner can reuse: 学(xué) for a discipline (天文学(tiānwénxué), astronomy), 家(jiā) for the person who practises it, 子(zǐ) in the small particles of chemistry (原子(yuánzǐ), 分子(fēnzǐ)), where it keeps its full third tone. Many of the other words follow a piece of research from start to finish — a hypothesis (假设(jiǎshè)), a sample (样本(yàngběn)), a control group (对照组(duìzhàozǔ)), an analysis (分析(fēnxī)), a conclusion (结论(jiélùn)) — so it pays to learn them in that order.
