The fifteenth entry is saltar a abertura, and the noun inside it is one an English reader already owns twice over without recognising either copy. Latin apertura, built on aperire, to open, meant nothing more than an opening, and that is still what a abertura means in Portuguese: the opening of a door, o horário de abertura of a shop, and here the opening minutes an impatient viewer skips. English took the word in twice and put it to work in a specialist trade each time. Straight from the Latin came « aperture », which now belongs to a lens and to almost nothing else. By the older road, through Old French, came « overture », which belongs to an orchestra, and to a first approach when somebody makes overtures to somebody else. Neither can be said of a door. So the plain everyday sense that Portuguese kept is exactly the one English has no descendant for, and has to cover with a native word, « the opening ». Read a abertura do episódio as an aperture and the sentence goes to the camera shop; read it as an overture and it goes to the opera.
