Verbs that replace a clause

One word for what would otherwise take eight.

The first entry is transigir, and the reason it feels unfamiliar is that English owns only its negative half. We have « intransigent » and « intransigence », said every week of a party that will not move an inch, but there is no verb « to transige » and no adjective « transigent » to set against them. The positive has to be built out of other words: to give ground, to meet somebody halfway, to come to terms. English keeps a small collection of such orphans, and they are worth knowing as a class, because each one looks as though a plainer relative must exist. « Unkempt » hair has never been kempt outside a dictionary; a « disgruntled » customer was not gruntled beforehand; a « ruthless » decision leaves no ruth, which was a word for pity four centuries ago; and « feckless » carries a « feck » that plain English never had. The consequence for this page is small and exact. A comissão não transige turns straight into « the committee is intransigent », while a comissão transige cannot be turned back, and the translator has to name the concession instead.
