Nuclear engineering

A reactor, its barriers and what becomes of the rest.

The twentieth entry is o reprocessamento, and the two letters at the front of it are worth a stop. English writes « reprocessing » closed up, with no hyphen and nothing to decide, and it does the same with « rebuild » and « reuse ». But there is a small awkward set in which the hyphen is not decoration: it is the only thing holding two unrelated words apart. « To recover » is to get better, while « to re-cover » is to put a new cover on a chair. « To reform » is to mend an institution, while « to re-form » is to take shape again. « To resign » is to leave a post, while « to re-sign » is to sign on again, which is the opposite of leaving. « Recreation » is a walk in the park; « re-creation » is building it again. The rule is short once seen: solid by default, and the hyphen only where leaving it out would hand the reader a different word. Portuguese is spared all of it, because reprocessar is written solid and has no rival hiding behind a hyphen.
