Words for what is actually heard, instead of saying that something made a noise.
The thirty-fourth entry is ecoar, and the English word beside it is the only one on this page that was once somebody’s name. Greek had ēkhō, a noun meaning sound, and it also had Echo, a mountain nymph. The story about her is an explanation dressed as a punishment: she had talked too much, she was deprived of speech of her own, and all she had left was the power to give back the ends of other people’s sentences. That is precisely what an empty corridor does. Latin took the noun over, French passed it on, and English has had « echo » since the Middle Ages, as noun and as verb: « the voice echoed », « we heard an echo ». Two small things came with the borrowing. The plural is « echoes », spelt with an e like « heroes » and « potatoes » and unlike « pianos ». And the figurative use is ordinary rather than literary: « to echo a complaint » is simply to repeat it, and « an echo of the nineties » is a resemblance and not a sound at all. Ecoar carries none of that history on its face.
