Tourism and travel planning

Booking rooms and tours, travel costs and seasons, and the words travel writing uses.

Hotel pages, tour brochures and travel articles are written in compact two-kanji words that rarely turn up in conversation: a booking page says 空室(くうしつ)あり, a brochure promises a 行程(こうてい) and a 送迎(そうげい). Travel writing says 堪能(たんのう)する where English says “enjoy”, and it has two words for the feel of a place, 風情(ふぜい) and 情緒(じょうちょ), that have no neat English match; “charm” and “atmosphere” are only near.
