Contracts, forms and procedures

The words on a contract, an application form and the paperwork around them.

This page explains vocabulary and is not advice on any contract or procedure. Paperwork in Japanese runs on two-kanji words that are almost never heard in conversation, and several of them come in pairs worth learning together: 有効(ゆうこう) and 無効(むこう), 原本(げんぽん) and 写(うつ)し. English speakers tend to read 控(ひか)え as just another word for a copy; it is the copy you keep for yourself after handing the original in. And where an English form asks for a signature, a Japanese one often asks for a seal as well: 署名(しょめい)と押印(おういん).
