Working from home
The words for a working day that takes place between two rooms.
Seventh on the list is il rumore di fondo, and the noun is a false friend of the patient kind, because it looks like « rumour » and it never once means it. Il rumore is noise and only noise: the traffic outside, the neighbour drilling, the hiss on a bad line. What an English reader hears instead is common talk, something passed on without proof, and Italian has a separate word for that, la voce, as in corre voce che chiudano. Both languages are holding half of the same Latin noun. Rumor named the din of a crowd and, in the same breath, what the crowd was saying, and the two senses lived together because a rumour was audible before it was anything else. English took the talk and let the din go; Italian took the din and let the talk go. The seam is still visible in one phrase worth keeping whole: la notizia ha fatto rumore reports no sound at all. It says the news caused a stir.
