Cranes and lifting gear

The sixteenth entry is il segnalatore, and the Italian word says plainly what the man does: he signals. A dictionary duly offers « signaller », and on a British site nobody says it. The word there is « banksman » — the person on the ground who directs the lift, keeps himself where the driver can see him, and owns the movement for as long as the load is in the air. It has nothing to do with money, and a reader who meets it for the first time in a method statement will not find it under any of the obvious entries. Two neighbours travel with it. Whoever puts the slings on is « the slinger », and on many jobs the two roles are one and written as « slinger/banksman ». Whoever plans the lift rather than directs it is « the appointed person ». American English differs again and says « signalperson », or loosely « spotter ». So the Italian word, transparent as it is, lands on a title that has to be learnt as a word rather than built from the verb.
