Building conservation

Keeping the old fabric of a building rather than replacing it with new.

Il marciume is glossed here as « rot », and the two words are built on different principles. English offers a bare noun: « rot » is what happens, and the stuff it produces has no separate name. Italian starts from the adjective marcio, rotten, and adds the suffix -ume, which turns a quality into a mass of the quality — not the process but the soft dark matter itself, all of it, seen as one lot. The suffix is alive and it is never neutral: il sudiciume is filth by the bucket, il lerciume is grime, il fradiciume is everything that has gone sodden. A second collective suffix, -ame, does the same work without the disgust: il legname is timber as a quantity, il bestiame is livestock, il pollame is poultry. On site the difference is practical. Il marciume parte sempre dall’appoggio della trave does not report an event; it points at a substance, at the place where the beam has turned into something else. « Rot » makes an English reader hear a verb, and il marciume makes an Italian one see a handful.
