Fire safety in a building

The thirtieth entry is il progetto antincendio, and the noun in the middle is the one that catches English readers out. « A project » in English is a piece of work with a beginning and an end: a team, a budget, a deadline. Il progetto is almost never that. It is the design — the drawings, the calculations and the reasoning that say how a thing is to be built. An architect hands over il progetto while the building exists only on paper, and il progettista is the designer, not a project manager. So il progetto antincendio is the fire safety design of a building: the document that explains why these compartments, these doors and these distances are enough. Translate it as « the fire project » and you have described a programme of works with a schedule and an owner, which is a different thing altogether. Where Italian really does mean a managed piece of work it tends to borrow, and says il project or la commessa. Read the noun as « design » first, and check the rest of the sentence before you allow it to be anything else.
