The relative pronouns beyond che

The preposition goes to the front and takes cui with it.

Che covers subject and direct object and never changes: il libro che leggo, la donna che parla. As soon as a preposition stands in front, che is ruled out.

Then it is cui, which never changes either: la persona con cui parlo, il motivo per cui sono venuto, la città in cui vivo. Only the preposition varies, and it goes at the front of the clause where English would leave it at the end.

Il cui, la cui, i cui mean « whose » and follow the thing possessed: lo scrittore la cui opera ho letto. The article belongs to the work, not to the writer — which is the opposite of what English does with « whose », where nothing agrees at all.

Il quale is used where che or cui would be ambiguous, and it agrees: la sorella di Paolo, la quale abita a Roma — so that it is clear the sister is meant and not Paolo.

Die typisch deutsche Falle

Aufgepasst

Che after a preposition is always wrong: la persona con che parlo does not exist, it is con cui. And the other half of the rule is just as strict: cui never appears without a preposition, except in il cui. Il libro cui leggo is wrong for that reason — one word needs a preposition and the other refuses one.

Falsch:È il collega con che divido l'ufficio.
Richtig:È il collega con cui divido l'ufficio.

A preposition in front means cui behind it.
