A common trap

Wrong Si è smesso di fumare una sigaretta e poi è ripartito.

Right Si è fermato a fumare una sigaretta e poi è ripartito.

English keeps two of these verbs apart by the form that follows: « stop smoking » means giving it up and « stop to smoke » means pausing in order to. Italian has one construction for the first — smettere di fumare — and expresses the second differently, with fermarsi a fumare. Translating « stop to » with smettere says the opposite of what was meant.
